Brenda and Clint's

Friday afternoon we picked up Kiwi Mike Taylor and all headed up to Nuffield Scholar Brenda Schoepp's place for the weekend. They have a beautiful home on a small ranch north of Calgary. We were welcomed with a campfire and steaks on the bbq!! Brenda and Clint were so hospitable, and we enjoyed a relaxing weekend!

Saturday afternoon, Shea and I headed further North to see Brenda's brother who is farming organically not far from Edmonton. Jim Schoepp grows Barley, Oats, Rye and Wheat, as well as running a beef feedlot and an organic produce store in his local town. He is unable to grow organic canola as a 5km radius is required between GM and organic canola, which he is unable to achieve. He is fighting a large battle with weeds, and rotation, cultivation and early silage are some of his control methods. He is using this Einbeck harrows to try and control small weeds early post emergence.

He is also using a rota-weeder PSPE which rolls a bar under the the ground but above the seed tro try and roll weeds out of the ground. Too hard for me to explain, but anyhow, dont think it would work in our soil types!

The weekend at Brenda's was great and we headed back early sunday morning for the Calgary Stampede!! Brenda Clint Shea and I below
